Tea research in the School of Plant, Environmental, and Soil Sciences at the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center is an interdisciplinary initiative with faculty members from horticulture collaborating with faculty in food science, economics, and environmental sciences. We are offering a grant funded graduate research assistantship for a highly qualified student pursuing an M.S. degree in Horticulture. Position is expected to begin in August 2024 (Fall Semester).
This research project focuses on the relationships among tea plant (Camellia sinensis) variety, the environment, and production and processing practices, aiming at gaining better understanding of the factors affecting tea quality and developing more sustainable and efficient practices for growing tea as a specialty crop in Louisiana and the Gulf region.
The student is expected to work with the team and conduct field and greenhouse experiments with a core focus on plant physiology responses, while the scope of research is flexible to fit the strengths and interests of the student. In addition, the student is expected to assist other students or duties related to tea team research.
This position is located on LSU Baton Rouge campus with field work at the teaching farm and the AgCenter Botanic Gardens at Burden. The accepted student will receive a competitive 12-month stipend that includes tuition and health benefits.
Requirements
- A B.S. degree in Horticulture, soil science, biological science, or a related field before the start date.
- GRE is not required. TOEFL is required for international applicants.
- Previous research experience or internship experience in the following and related fields: horticulture, soil science, greenhouse or field crop production, plant or crop modeling, plant physiology, or plant nutrition.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and not afraid of working in the field during summer or a hot and humid environment with appropriate workers protection, and willing to work during holidays and weekends when experiments are running.
- The candidate must have an interest in plant science and specialty crop production, a fundamental desire for personal growth, exceptional work ethic and integrity, collaborative work attitude and mature receptiveness to feedback, time management, and written communication skills to collaborate in a diverse team environment.
- Applicants with a background in computer modeling and data analysis will be considered favorably, as will applicants with a proven track record of effective written and oral communication and laboratory skills.
